Clint's upgrades cost gold plus 5 metal bars and take 2 days. This guide lists every tier, timing tips, and prices for pans, trash cans, rods and backpacks.
Cost: Gold + 5 bars
Time: 2 days
Order: Copper, Steel, Gold, Iridium only in sequence
Closed: Fridays after the Community Center is restored
Cost and Effect by Tier
Copper: 2,000g + 5 Copper Bars. Hoe and Watering Can hit 3 tiles in a line; can capacity 55 (starter 40)
Steel: 5,000g + 5 Iron Bars. 5 tiles in a line, capacity 70
Gold: 10,000g + 5 Gold Bars. 3x3 area, capacity 85
Iridium: 25,000g + 5 Iridium Bars. 6x3 area, capacity 100
Axe hits on a full-grown tree: 10 starter, 8 copper, 6 steel, 4 gold, 2 iridium. Copper unlocks Large Stumps and steel unlocks Large Logs
Pickaxe breaks rocks faster each tier; farm boulders need steel
Making the Bars
Each bar is 5 ore plus 1 coal smelted in a furnace, so one upgrade means 25 ore and 5 coal. Tools must be upgraded in order, so you cannot jump from copper to iridium.
Timing and Pitfalls
Your tool is gone for two nights, so finish using it, then drop it off before the shop closes
A notice appears in the lower-left corner when it is ready; collect it the next day
Clint's shop and geode breaking stay open during an upgrade
Enchantments are kept
After the Community Center is restored, Clint works in the Boiler Room on Fridays and cannot upgrade unless it rains. After the Beach Resort opens he may visit Ginger Island on Fridays
Energy and Lost Tools
Upgraded axes, pickaxes and hoes cost the same energy per swing; you just get more power or area. A charged Watering Can costs more energy after upgrades, and each Farming level cuts that by 0.1. A lost basic tool reappears the next day by your bed, in the fridge or at the Mayor's Lost and Found.

Copper trash can: 1,000g + 5 Copper Bars, 15% refund
Steel: 2,500g + 5 Iron Bars, 30%
