What is Saju?

Saju (四柱, "four pillars") is the traditional Korean way of reading destiny from the year, month, day and hour of your birth. Each pillar is written with two characters, one of the Ten Heavenly Stems (the energy of the sky) and one of the Twelve Earthly Branches (the energy of the earth), for eight characters in total, which is why it's also called the Eight Characters (八字). The balance of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water) in those characters reveals your natural temperament.

Period fortunes come from how your day master (the stem of your birth day) relates to the energy of a given day or month, a system known as the Ten Gods. When Wealth energy comes in, your money luck rises; when Authority energy (career and honor) comes in, your work luck rises; and days that supply an element your chart lacks lift your overall flow.

Months change at the traditional solar terms, and the calculation corrects for the roughly 30-minute gap between Korea Standard Time and actual solar time. If you were born right around the moment a solar term changes, results may differ between Korean almanacs.

Fortunes are for entertainment only and should not be used as the basis for medical, financial, legal or other important decisions.
