Google has released its development tools for Android XR devices in stable form at the Android Developer Summit. At the same event, XREAL Aura, the first wired XR glasses based on Android XR, also launched. Google explained the news on the 6th in its developer blog.
XREAL Aura weighs under 95 g and uses a separate compute puck. Google said that thanks to the common Android foundation, existing apps work as-is from launch day.
The core Jetpack XR libraries—SceneCore, ARCore for Jetpack XR and the XR runtime—are now stable. The Android XR Emulator in Android Studio is also stable, letting developers check screen layouts without a physical device. ARCore's Geospatial API is stable too, allowing digital content to be anchored to real-world coordinates.
The Android XR Engine Hub, which helps with setup and optimization for Unity, Godot and Unreal Engine, is also stable. It comes with OpenXR extensions and validated project settings preconfigured, and offers in-engine profiling of system traces, thermals and frame budgets. Contract XR ported its Unity game Jigsaw Night to XREAL Aura.
For audio-focused devices, ML Kit's generative AI speech synthesis API has also arrived. It can produce natural-sounding speech with on-device AI, and sound design guidelines and an Acorn guide have been released. Google advised developers to update to the latest Android Studio and add the stable dependencies.
